Dancing

by Ashoka Sen

Ashoka was born in India and has lived in England, on the edge of the Derbyshire Peak District, for over 40 years. Her self-taught style reflects this mixed heritage, featuring eastern themes with inspiration drawn from dramatic local scenery. It features natural objects but rather than copying nature in its total reality, Ashoka creates a fairyland atmosphere, where people and animals move freely in a rhythmic motion.

Ashoka is an accomplished writer, both in English and in her native Bengali. Her writing uses varieties of literary forms, from flash fiction to serious novels, from nonsense rhymes to lyrics, from long narrative verses to contemplative philosophical discourses. Her achievements include two novels, a collection of short poems, a collection of short stories and two books for children. Ashoka gained a BA (English Studies) and MA (Writing) from Sheffield Hallam University. Ashoka won the East Midland Writers' Development Award in 2000 for her literary work and her poems have been broadcast on the radio.
