Naturally

by Eleanor Watson

Currently, in the studio I contemplate photos of domestic spaces and re-tell them in paint; hording aspirational interiors and gardens which are part of a collective imagery of a common desire.  I create a tableau of objects without the gesture or expression of their inhabitants; the spaces reveal only small aspects of their story, allowing for contemplation and escape.

Modelling is minimal; instead I layer areas of flat colour to create an obviously false depth. I enjoy the play between the believable and the fictitious. Colour is important, especially the ground which imbues the picture with a tone from which I build a narrative of colours. I am concerned with what is revealed and that which is potentially concealed.
