by Maggie Read Arts

I was trained at the West Surrey College of Art and Design (now known as the University of the Creative Arts) where I studied Graphic Design and Illustration. I worked as a freelance illustrator for several years before having a family and later re-launched my career as an Art Tutor in Adult Education. I continued to paint and accept commissions for portraits and illustrations.

Thirteen years ago, I started Pirbright Art Club and now regularly organise and run exhibitions, outdoor painting days, workshops and painting holidays in Cornwall and France, as well as weekly classes in Pirbright and at my studio in Mayford, Woking. See website for more details.

Experienced in teaching most media, my strengths are in drawing, watercolours, pastels and pen & wash. I show my students how to achieve interesting composition and prepare sketches for paintings. Demonstrations are clear, and colour-mixing is kept simple. I teach drawing and watercolours to beginners and intermediate students at Woking Adult Learning Centre and more experienced students can join one of my private groups to expand their knowledge and skills, learn to paint in other media and develop their style. I also run a regular weekly ‘portrait’ class and monthly workshops with live portrait models.

Figures & portraits are favourite subjects in my paintings. I like to combine an element of realism with more impressionistic surroundings and I prefer to combine media, especially when foreground texture is required. I often use coloured inks to create a rich background and pastel to enhance the colours of rocks and foliage.

I occasionally demonstrate to other art groups and societies. Figure & portrait, landscape, seascape and still-life are among the many subjects that I demonstrate using various media from charcoal to watercolour and pastels.

Each year I take part in the Surrey Artists Open Studios event at my studio in The Mayford Centre, Woking, Surrey. The public are welcome to visit and many of the pictures will be for sale. See SAOS website for dates in 2013.
