My work looks at the idea of place in the urban environment and our relation to it in terms of history and identity. In the Landmark series I have been considering the idea of what we call landmarks and how subjective this is – a landmark only becomes a landmark if we are familiar with it and if we ourselves have designated it as such. These are the anonymous and yet familiar constructions we find in conurbations everywhere. In what can seem to be our homogenised urban environments with ubiquitous structures and architecture, we identify where we are and one area from another by using these structures and their juxtapositions as landmarks. Petrol stations, tower blocks, satellite dishes or half derelict structures help us to pinpoint our location and are enormously significant in defining our connection to our environment.I have been a printmaker for 20 years working in South East London and I have taught etching and monoprinting to adults for many years. I have a studio in Lewisham and also work at Artichoke studios in Brixton. I run informal courses for adults printing without a press at my studio in Lewisham Arthouse. These are ongoing and run throughout the year. Please contact me for details.
