Axis

by ed smith

I paint flat, hard-edged abstract forms in vivid colour combinations, working almost entirely in acrylic on canvas, but occasionally on masonite.   Employing a rigorous geometry, the images range from the static and self-enclosed to the dynamic, in which the forms are not bound by the picture frame, but possess the capability of continuing virtually to infinity.   This can be seen most strongly in the paintings titled 'Axis' 'Praxis' and 'Entasis', where, against a black void, the forms can potentially appear to be a glimpse of some greater and mysterious universe.
